Frederick County Schools Superintendent David Sovine has named Joanne Altendorf the new principal at Millbrook High School effective July 1. Altendorf, who has spent the past six years as an assistant principal at Sherando High School, succeeds Carolyn Price who is retiring following a 33-year career with Frederick County Public Schools.

Sovine says, “Mrs. Altendorf distinguished herself from an outstanding group of candidates for this position with her knowledge of instructional best practices, ability to help cultivate strong relationships and a passion for helping students reach their full potential. During her six years as an assistant principal at Sherando, she has collaborated with her colleagues, parents and others to implement initiatives designed to help address specific student needs and to help better prepare all students to become successful, engaged citizens. In addition to her work at Sherando, Mrs. Altendorf has been an active participant on a number of division-level committees charged with helping to develop a comprehensive professional learning system and revising the division’s educational technology plan. She possesses the knowledge, experience and passion necessary to successfully lead a comprehensive high school such as Millbrook.”

Altendorf says, “Working at Sherando High School over the past six years has truly been a privilege. Leaving will be bittersweet, but I am excited to have the opportunity to move into the role of principal of Millbrook High School. Millbrook has a tradition of excellence and I look forward to continuing that tradition by working closely with the staff and community to inspire students to achieve greatness.”

Altendorf began her education career in 2003 as a science teacher in New Jersey. She spent a total of three years teaching in South River and Montgomery Township, New Jersey, before moving to North Carolina where she taught science from 2006-2012 in Burlington and High Point. In 2010, she received the North Carolina Science Teachers Association Outstanding High School Science Teacher Award.

In 2012, Altendorf became an assistant principal at Sherando High School where she has overseen the math, special education and gifted departments in addition to fulfilling additional duties as a member of the school’s administrative team.

Altendorf earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. She also received a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction as well as a post master’s certificate in school administration from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
